Train Crash
Date: 03.29.2018

Shortly after 5:00 pm this afternoon, the dispatch went out for a train crash on the Norristown high speed line. Squad and Ladder 23, Rescue 21, Rescue 22, LM-5, FM 34-3, Narberth Ambulance, and Lower Merion Police responded to the County Line Road overpass of the Route 100 line to find north and southbound trains stopped north of the station with a broken pole and wires down and damage to the third rail protective cover. Luckily there were no injuries. Once power was secure, firefighters assisted evacuating all trains and assisting the passengers up to the street level. As we were ready to clear the scene, a report of a passenger having an asthma attack on a train came in. Through contact with Montgomery County dispatch, phase II put the train's location closer to the Montgomery Ave station. Rescue 21 and Squad 23 responded to assist Narberth Ambulance with removing the individual in distress from a southbound train approximately 400 yards south of the Montgomery Ave station. Rescue 21 was in service for just under 2 hours.

Ladder Assist
Date: 04.29.2018

Just after 8 pm tonight the building assignment went out for the City Line Shopping Center in Bala Cynwyd. Stations 28, 22, Engine 26 and Ladder 21 responded. Initial reports of smoke in the building turned into a basement fire at Jimmy Johns sandwhich shop. The working fire dispatch brought trucks from the remainder of the township companies and Narberth Ambulance. Ladder 21 took up a position in the front of the building, put the aerial to the roof and pulled a line and hooked to the hydrant as a precaution. Crews checked the Bravo exposure (Qdoba) for signs of extension and assisted with ventilation. The assignment was scaled back as the fire turned out to be leaves in a window well burning sending lots of smoke into multiple buildings.

Early Morning House Fire
Date: 07.21.2018

As the sun was rising over Ardmore, firefighters were being alerted to a building fire on East Spring Avenue in Ardmore.  An occupant was reporting their smoke detector activation with an odor then smoke visible in the third floor apartment.  Engine 21 made the response to assist the Merion Fire Company of Ardmore.  Upon arrival, we dropped 400' of 5" supply line and connected to a hydrant as a precaution.  The crew made their way to the second floor apartment, forced entry and searched for occupants and signs of extension.  The fire was knocked quickly and overhaul was performed.  The engine was back in the station in just under an hour and a half.  Units on location were:

Merion Fire Company of ardmore: Engine 25, Ladder 25 & Engine 25-1

Bryn Mawr Fire Company: Engine 23 & Squad 23

Ropes and Riggings
Date: 08.26.2018

Today marked the final day of our ropes and rigging class. A special shoutout to our two great instructors Chris Christopher Feder and Kevin Swan. Our morning consisted of patient packaging skills using a stokes basket and sled. We moved on to an obstacle course moving a 165 lb. mannequin in a sled up, down around and through the course using all the skills and techniques we had practiced over the initial eight hours of the class. And to make it a real challenge, two raw eggs were placed in containers with the rescue dummy at the head and under his knees. Needless to say our members rose to the challenge and neither egg cracked or broke. After lunch, we carried out a low angle rescue scenario. The class was a great refresher for those with previous training and provided a good foundation to build on for the novices.
